T-shirts as corporate gifts? – A more casual approach

Over time, the t-shirt industry has expanded quite significantly all around the globe. As more and more companies have casual Fridays, t-shirts are becoming a popular choice for corporate gifting and justifiably so.

The story so far…

T-shirts were first seen in the Spanish-American War as an undergarment wear. By 1950s, the American public had already started seeing war veterans and ex-sailors in their white cotton undershirts on the streets. When Marlon Brando wore one in “A streetcar named desire”, t-shirts found their way to the forefront. Consequently, the Cooper Underwear company rebranded this garment and launched it as an outerwear. As time passed, printed tshirts became a platform for expression and dissent. Today, due to their immense popularity, the t-shirt industry has evolved and thus, we have digital t-shirts and concepts like t-shirt marketing.

T-shirts as corporate gifts

T-shirts serve as great gifts due to their potential for customization. Gifting your team custom t-shirts can stir up a sense of unity and bridge the gap between the brand and its employees. At the same time, it’s a casual gift which can easily be linked with positive experiences and memories. For instance, if there’s an office trip around the corner, special t-shirts could be made for the occasion to capture the experience. Yet, many brands have realized that behind this veil of ‘casual’, t-shirts very well function as a great marketing tool. It’s a more direct form of marketing without incurring any significant costs. If your employees wear your gifted company t-shirts outside of the workplace, your brand gets free exposure. However, whether your employees wear the t-shirts (outside of work) or not depends only upon one factor – the quality.

The quality factor and GSM

It is crucial to avoid anything too crude or loud in order to make sure that a majority of your employees/clients end up wearing your t-shirts. If a t-shirt is of good material, it will be worn more, i.e. higher cultural and consumer value. Low-quality t-shirts can create a bad impression of your brand. Naturally, no brand wants to be associated with inferior products. Corporate gifts are supposed to last long to help your brand get more exposure. The t-shirts to be gifted should be durable.

To check the durability of your t-shirts, their GSM value is required. GSM means grams per square metre. A 180 GSM t-shirt is considered ideal; anything below 160 can get damaged easily. Yet, as the GSM value increases, the fabric gets thicker. Apparel of higher GSM may be unsuitable for summer wear. Therefore, it is recommended to opt for 180 GSM quality tshirts.

The more you know…

There are several factors that have to be kept in mind while investing in corporate T-shirts. Many organizations face avoidable problems when it comes to apparel.

Types of T-shirts

There are multiple types of T-shirts available in the market and you should choose one with your company guidelines in mind. The choices are multiple – polo neck, high neck, round neck, sports t-shirts, etc, and you should choose a t-shirt according to the general look you’re going for. For instance, if you’re keen on an athletic look, sports t-shirts are the ideal choice. T-shirts are mostly considered a unisex garment. Although, some suppliers also offer different fittings for men and women. The major difference between the two fittings is that women’s t-shirts are much narrower at the waist. Office taskforces are diverse, and personal customization is the key to inclusiveness.

Colour Scheme

The colour of the t-shirt is another element that has to be chosen carefully. It should accentuate your brand logo and not suppress it. That is why, most branded T-shirts use light colours such as white and light blue. The colour of the t-shirt has to complement the colours of your brand logo.

Size chart

Whenever there is a bulk order of apparel, most consumers have one common complaint – size. Every brand has a slightly different measurement for size labels such as S, M, L, XL, XXL, etc. These variations in sizes can cause issues with fitting. Hence, you should always ask for sample sets and have your team members try out the different sizes, so there’s no such complication once the t-shirts have been ordered. Sample sets eliminate the inaccuracy of definite labels, whose specific measurements can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Branding methods

This is the age of customization and branding methods are no exception to it. There is screen printing, digital printing and even embroidery available today. There are set advantages to each of these methods. For instance, if you’re looking for a more detailed print, digital printing takes the cake as the material is directly printed on the fabric by the computer, resulting in more and finer details. Screen printing is the traditional method and preferred for printing bright colours. If you’re looking for that personal touch then getting your brand logo embroidered is the way to go.

T-shirts as corporate gifts are relatively inexpensive and serve multiple purposes. Their potential as a marketing tool should not be underestimated and they can greatly enhance the team spirit by creating a sense of oneness among your employees. Moreover, branded t-shirts should have a personal touch to them, which is an essential element of gifts. This personal touch and customization is only possible with good branding, and it’s as important as the gift itself.
